  16. <p>Lone John Silber adds acid to Massachusetts' politics
  17. </p>
  18. <p>     One week after dashing headlong into the Massachusetts
  19. gubernatorial race, Boston University's president, John Silber,
  20. was asked if he'd gleaned any early lessons from his
  21. introduction to politics. Said the former philosophy professor
  22. with characteristic snap, crackle and pop: "It advises me to
  23. be less interesting, to learn to speak plastic, so that no one
  24. has the slightest idea what you're talking about."

  26. <p>     Not to worry. Silber's quest to resuscitate the state's
  27. economy and morale, which have suffered under Governor Michael
  28. Dukakis, will not be boring. A long-shot candidate for the
  29. Democratic nomination, Silber promises to use the same radical
  30. surgery on state government that he has exercised for the past
  31. 19 years to reform faculty and policies at B.U. His platform
  32. stresses tough budget choices but a big boost for education.
  33. </p>
  34. <p>     Armed with a healthy ego, a sharp mind and sharper tongue,
  35. the 63-year-old Texan has rarely if ever been known to be
  36. diplomatic. But he doesn't seem worried about transferring his
  37. pugnacious style from academe to politics. "I'm an outsider to
  38. political office but experienced in making change," he said in
  39. announcing his candidacy last month. Silber is convinced that
  40. an outsider is exactly what Massachusetts voters want, and a
  41. recent poll offers some support for his theory.
  42. </p>
  43. <p>     He will have no trouble getting voters' attention. Silber
  44. can ignite a media fire storm as easily as he can quote
  45. Shakespeare. By day nine of his campaign, he had labeled the
  46. Bay State "a welfare magnet"; referred to the city of Lowell,
  47. which has a large Asian population, as "the Cambodian capital
  48. of America"; and wondered out loud why Massachusetts has
  49. "suddenly become so popular for people who are accustomed to
  50. living in the tropical climate." In a testy press conference,
  51. Silber later denied charges of racism and accused the media
  52. of taking his comments out of context. The next day he was back
  53. again with another whopper, telling a group of teachers, "You
  54. can live with alcohol abuse and still achieve at a high level."
